Survey start time: 7:20 AM, Observers: Elizabeth McCullough, Thomas McCullough, Rich Yukubousky

no burrow data entered

disturbance - Eagle (7:26 SAM - 8:10 AM) (flee bluff or beach) Eagle flew in from water over birds and perched in tree on edge of bluff in center of colony. Birds flew farther out in water and clumped together. Gradually began to move closer to shore but never came back to normal activity while eagle remained there.

disturbance - eagle (7:57 AM - ?) (fly off water) The same eagle in 7:26 AM disturbance flew off perch and landed on beach in southern end of colony where it waqs pecking at something on the ground. This caused birds in south end to fly off water to land farther from shore. After a few minutes on the ground the eagle flew north along the bluff close to the burrows and through the majority of th colony, continuing north up the beach until turning east well north of the colony boundaries and out of site within a minute or two. Birds gradually began to return closer to shore but never returned to normal behavior before end of survey at 8:20.

survey.note - No activity to burrows today. Bird behavior inhibited by presence of eagle prominently perched in tree in the center of the colony for the majority of the survey. There were two birds perched on the lip of the bluff above burrow #4 when we arrived to start the survey but they flew off the bluff when I was counting them for the initial count and no birds ever returned to the bluff. Another bird flew off the bluff when Rich and I were doing the second count and likely must have come out of a burrow but Rich and I had our backs turned to do the counts and neither saw where the bird came from. So no burrow activity at all today.

survey.note - Foggy and strong surf today. Birds were initially located far out in water and they came in closer to shore but there were never any visits to beach, rocks or bluff despite the lack of any visible disturbing presence such as eagles .

disturbance - Eagle (8:33 - 8:37) (fly off water) Eagle briefly circled over water to north of colony and then flew away to north. Birds flew off water to deeper water but very quickly came closer in and actually began making fish visits and actively flying to and from bluff for first time of the morning. I suspect that eagle had been out of sight to us but the birds had been aware of it and that had inhibited their activity before the eagle left.

disturbance - Eagles (7:14 - 7:24) (flee bluff or beach, fly off water) 2 eagles flew to a tree on bluff over the northern third of the colony. The few birds perched on the bluff flew off and birds in water flew to deeper water. Eagles left perch in tree by 7:20 and there was a flurry of fish deliveries almost immediately afterwards and birds moved in close to shore.

disturbance - Eagles (7:55 - 8:06) (fly off water) 2 eagles flew out over water where birds were swimming and one flew away to south of colony and the other briefly perched in a tree at north end of colony before flying north. Birds flew off water to deeper water but had returned close to shore within 10 minutes and made fish deliveries shortly afterwards.

survey.note - birds undisturbed by human activity

disturbance - Eagle (7:39 - 7:59) (flee bluff or beach, fly off water) Juvenile eagle flew south along edge of bluff . Birds flew off bluff and off water to deeper water. They were difficult to see during middle count time due to the fog. They began moving back closer to shore by 8:59, then began scouting flights near bluff and then fish deliveries at 8:06. They were never back to the previous behavior where they were perching on bluff near active burrows just prior to eagle appearance.
