The count is pretty "iffy" on this one. The birds were very far out. For a while I was thinking perhaps they wouldn't come back to Bush Point. Then I became a happy camper on the 22nd - they're definitely looking for a place to call home for hatching!
I could almost visualize the rose in the beak of one. I have never seen anything like that before. Three birds hopped onshore about 6 feet from me. One of them remained about one foot separate from the other two who, get this, danced. Well, that's the only explanation I have anyway. They were head-to-head and went around in a circle like that 3 times - looked a lot like a tango to me.
Anyhow, the behavior today (other than the tango) was apartment hunting. The nest they used last year already has a different bird in it, but there's a lot more apartments available there - I hope they don't give up!
They approached the deck numerous times doing a close-up fly-by. None of the birds had any food in their mouth.
Going through the same thing Phyllis and I did last year - it's hard to tell. A PG flew under the deck and didn't leave. Is it perching or is it nesting?
Today was a very low tide at the end of my hour so I walked down and looked at where the PG had entered. Sure enough it was till sitting there. The problem is, I saw no evidence that it was a nest area. Hence, I'm still holding out on designating a nest site until I see at least food in a PG's mouth.
The behavior so far is identical to last year though - I think there will be one viable nest there again this year if no other birds usurp it.
disturbance - unknown (9:05 - ??)
(fly off water)
There were 6 birds sitting on the water right off the deck and suddenly they all just took off. I have no idea why. They didn't return before my survey ended.
It's still unclear. They were doing a LOT of diving - presumably feeding. However, they never surfaced with food in their mouth.
They did enter under the dock, but I still cannot call that a VB. There are 3 potential areas for nests.
I did observe a lot of perching on top of the deck.
Let's hope for a fish delivery soon...
disturbance - fishing off deck (? - 8:30)
stayed far out
disturbance - deck resurfacing ( - )
This is a general disturbance note. I was informed the B&B would be resurfacing the deck. The nest is right under the deck so this will likely cause the birds some disturbance.
I had been holding off on declaring and entering data for a burrow because it's so hard to tell if it's that or perching. However, without seeing one food delivery all season I can now enter all the data and declare my site complete - fledgling was in the water 8/31.
So, fishing off the deck again. I could hear a lot of vocalizing. At the time there was only one bird - far out like they usually are when lots of fishing is happening on the deck.
It turns out, the fledgling was swimming around the doc area and the bird further out was calling to it. I hope it didn't try to eat a fishing lure.
I'm calling my site done - only had the one nest.
So, I never saw any sign of food all season, but there is a new PG among us. It's a interesting site - especially having the deck resurfaced during breeding season.
